Episode 007 - LEAKED: Real & Raw Conversation with My Dad. The Parents Side of the Diagnosis
I'll never know what it's like to be a parent of a type one diabetic, but that's why I'm so grateful for open conversations like this with my dad where I get to hear his perspective. I was diagnosed with type one diabetes when I was 19, a freshman in college and during my first real time away from my parents living on my own. I know how difficult that time was for me, but never really sat down to ask about the experience of my parents during this entire transition.
Inside this conversation, you'll hear the raw side of a parents perception of the diagnosis from the initial symptoms, to the financial realities and how type one diabetes shaped our relationship and family dynamic.
Here's what we discuss inside today's episode:
- The first conversation about something being wrong
- The initial diagnosis
- The experience of being diagnosed as a young adult
- How my dad has advocated for me
- Dealing with insurance with the new diagnosis
- Dealing with questions from others
- Creating a system for emergency situations
- How diabetes lead me to my passion.
- My dad's advice for other parents

I was diagnosed with T1D at the age of 19, and to say that I was lost would be an understatement. In the years that followed my diagnosis, through trial, (a lot of) error, and education, I took my own A1C from a 7.1 to a consistent 5.7 and learned what it really takes to achieve predictability in my blood sugars. I also brought my Ulcerative Colitis into remission!
