A Low Blood Sugar and the Benefits of Exercise

27 April  2020

We’ve all been there…

You’re motivated – excited that you actually made it to the gym, and then

BAM!

20 minutes into your workout you start feeling a little shakey, and not because of the exercises..

You poke your figure or check your CGM, and low and behold… you’re dropping.. FAST!

You sit down on the bench in the change room and start sucking back the juice box that’s been sitting in your gym bag..

It doesn’t feel like enough, so you have a handful of skittles. And then maybe a couple glucose tabs too. This low is hitting you hard.

When your number starts to go back up, you sit there in disappointment.

Disappointed that you “ruined” your workout by eating all of the extra sugar. You’re feeling defeated and wonder why you bother exercising at all since you always seem to end up eating MORE because of lows..

Low blood sugars during your workout can be FRUSTRATING – but it doesn’t mean you should avoid exercise completely.⁣

I used to think that my workouts were counterproductive if I just had to consume the same calories I just burned for my lows. But now I understand that the extensive list of benefits outweigh that juice box I might have to drink or 15 minutes I have to wait to get started again.⁣

Exercise does more than burn calories:⁣

⇢ It improves insulin sensitivity⁣
⇢ It increases your muscle⁣
⇢ It improves your mood⁣
⇢ It relieves stress⁣
⇢ It improves cardiovascular health + endurance⁣
⇢ It helps make you feel mentally + physically STRONG⁣
⇢ It improves your quality of sleep⁣

That’s just a small list compared to the bigger picture.⁣

Next time you’re frustrated with the low, just remember the many other things that your workout is doing for your body and for your mind.

Give grace to your body that moves. Honor your body for all that it does.
